Hefei, October 14 (Reporter Sun Zhen) The reporter recently learned that the liquid metal lithium experimental loop developed by the project team of the Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology, Hefei Institute of Material Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, achieved 1500K (equivalent to 1227 degrees Celsius) for the first time in China 1000 hours of stable operation at ultra-high temperature marks a new breakthrough in the key technology of liquid metal coolant for my country's advanced nuclear energy system.

During the development process, the project team has overcome the problems of structural stress coordination, immersion measurement and flow stability control of the device in an ultra-high temperature liquid lithium working medium environment. At present, the circuit has carried out a series of high-temperature refractory alloys in the 1400K to 1500K temperature range of the anti-corrosion performance research experiment of the flowing lithium environment. The high-temperature operation performance has reached the international leading level, which is the compatibility of ultra-high temperature liquid lithium and structural materials. Research provides an important experimental platform.

It is reported that liquid lithium or lithium alloy can be used as a coolant in a nuclear fusion reactor to dissipate the heat generated by the reactor. It has the advantages of high operating temperature, good thermal conductivity, and low density. Because of the high boiling point of liquid lithium, the system can operate at normal pressure, and the use of lithium and other coolants can make the reactor system smaller and lighter. Therefore, it is the main coolant material for high-power space reactors and future fusion reactors.
